We Groove – Developing the underground music scene in Southeast Asia

The first time I saw WeGroove playing was at an after-after party (yes, you counted that right) at a place called Kahuna’s in Hội An. That day, there were three DJ’s playing: Kevin Wetherall, Dane Bach-Price and Dominic Irla. I had heard about WeGroove before, but until that day, I hadn’t had the chance to see them playing live. But since the first moment I got into the party, I really appreciated the kind of music that they played and got really involved. It was really a great way to end the night and start a new day.

A couple of weeks later, I decided to move to a new apartment in Hội An. And surprisingly, all the guys from WeGroove were also living in the same homestay that I had just moved in. And we quickly became friends.

It was the first time that I had DJ’s neighbors and I can say that these DJ’s were some of the best neighbors that someone can have. Not only because they are really cool and good people. But also, because it is really nice to be at home and listen to your neighbors playing some cool tunes next door. There were days that the guys would set up the DJ deck at the rooftop or by the pool and just play some music. It was a very cool atmosphere.

A few weeks later, Kevin and I started to talk about shooting some of his sets at some of our favorite places in Hội An. We thought about shooting these videos also as a way to remember our time in such a nice city. These are two videos that we recorded together:

We Groove | Sound of Silence

The first video we shot together was at one of our favorite coffee shops in Hoi A called Sound of Silence. It is located in front of An Bang Beach and they have really good coffee and a really chill area to hang out. Sunsets are also really cool to watch there. We set up the DJ deck at the back area of the coffee shop that goes straight to the beach.

We Groove | Sunrise in Hoi An

For the second video, we wanted to shoot the sunrise at a quiet beach. It is pretty difficult to find empty spots on the beach in both Đà Nẵng and Hội An cities. But we found a small area next to a hotel where we could place the DJ deck on some flat rocks. Even though we went at sunrise, there were already some locals at the area that also enjoyed the sound.
